What is Kinesiology Taping (Pain Tape) and What is it Used For?
Those "colorful tapes" we often see on the shoulders, knees, or necks of athletes at the Olympics, football matches, or volleyball tournaments have become very popular in clinics in recent years. However, the biggest question mark in patients' minds is: "Do these tapes contain muscle relaxant medication? How do they stop the pain?"
Commonly known as "Pain Tape" or "Sports Tape," Kinesio Tapes contain absolutely no medication, pain-relieving gel, heating agents, or chemicals. Their healing power is entirely physical and based on biomechanics.
If the Tapes Aren't Medicated, How Do They Heal? (Biomechanical Effect)
Kinesiology tapes are hypoallergenic cotton tapes that do not cause acrylic allergies, specially designed to exactly match the elasticity and weight of human skin. The healing mechanism works as follows:
When the tape is applied with the correct technique by a physiotherapist (adjusting the patient's position and applying tension to the tape at a specific percentage angle), it lifts the skin microscopically (about a tenth of a millimeter). Thanks to this "ventilating" or "lifting" effect (Decompression), the space between the fascia under the skin and the muscle tissue increases. By increasing this space:
- Circulation Accelerates: Compressed blood vessels and lymphatic circulation pathways under the skin are opened.
- The Pain Signal is Cut Off: The mechanical pressure on the free nerve endings (nociceptors) that are compressed and sending "pain" signals to the brain is lifted, and the pain eases within seconds.
- Edema and Bruising Disperse: Internal bleeding (bruising) and edema in areas with an ankle sprain or muscle tear are swept into the lymphatic system and dispersed much more quickly.
In Which Conditions Do We Apply Kinesio Taping in Our Marmaris Clinic?
In our clinical applications in Marmaris, we use taping not as a standalone "miracle cure," but as a "supportive" method to maintain the effects of our manual therapy, dry needling, and exercise programs even when the patient goes home (24/7 effect) in the following conditions:
- Posture Disorders: Especially for those with kyphosis (hunchback) or slouched shoulders, facilitation (stimulating) taping that stretches the skin when the patient slumps their shoulders forward, reminding them to "stand straight."
- Acute Sports Injuries: To support the muscle from the outside and relieve the load on the joint in meniscus tears, tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis (tendon inflammation), and muscle tears (like hamstring strains).
- Herniated Discs in Neck and Back (Acute Spasms): To alleviate the load placed on the spine due to the hernia and to relax the neck/lower back muscles that have locked themselves and gone into severe spasm (Inhibition technique).
- Neurological Issues (Facial Paralysis, etc.): In cases of peripheral facial paralysis (Bell's Palsy), to support sagging and functionless facial muscles against gravity and to increase nerve stimulation.
Very Important Warning: Do Not Apply by Watching the Internet!
You may see black, blue, pink, and skin-colored tapes on the market. Every color of the tape has structurally the same properties; the colors are diversified merely to create a "psychological (placebo) effect" on athletes (for example, making blue feel cooling and red feel warming). However, whether the tape should be pulled from the muscle's starting point (origin) to its ending point (insertion) or vice versa, and how much stretch should be given to the tape (0%, 25%, or 75%?), must be determined by a licensed physiotherapist who knows the anatomy and pathology of the muscle. Applying the tape at home by watching YouTube with incorrect tension (overstretching) can disrupt blood flow, leading to muscle cramps, skin irritations, and increased pain.
